These illustrations of beautiful leaved plants are from the Huntington Library’s rare copy of the fittingly titled Beautiful Leaved Plants (1861) by E. J. Lowe. These woodblock illustrations are the work of the talented Benjamin Fawcett (1808–93). Working from his business in the village of Driffield in East Yorkshire, England, Fawcett carved the designs (after the work of the naturalist artist A. F. Lydon) in relief on woodblocks. The designs were then printed in black and white, and elements of the design were then meticulously hand-colored. Fawcett was such a perfectionist that he even made his own colored inks! And wowie, LOOK AT THESE COLORS!!

I tried to use some mint leaves as scent bait when fishing, though I’m not sure how much difference it made lol. Before we left I took a sprig of Water mint to take with us. It’s currently in a glass of water waiting to root.

The bullhead catfish and the sunfish are the only fish in these photos that were brought with us to the farm (and they are still live and swimming)…… I wish I could make a tank for the pretty sunfish .___. but with what I have I can’t. I think the catfish in this set of photos is the only fish that I didn’t catch myself here XD

Organized Wild Roadside Planting:

This work in progress is slowly evolving. A dry, rocky, gritty slope supports only the most adaptable wilds and cultivars.

Yellow and Orange Hawkweed have been encouraged to flourish, along with Digatalis volunteers, Leucanthemum vulgare, wild Achillea, Potentilla recta, naturally occurring Sheep sorrel (Rumex) and other annual grasses mixed with rugged cultivated plants like Siberian Iris, and Hemerocallis fulva ‘Kwanzo Double’.

The key to the long term sustainability of the planting is finding the right balance of plants that can coexist together without one plant dominating the others.

brilliantbotany:

Valeriana officinalis, Garden heliotrope. It was introduced to the United States from Europe, and the root has been used in treatment of nervousness, insomnia and hysteria. It was used medicinally as far back as in Ancient Greece, and contains a host of medicinally relevant compounds (including alkaloids, iridoids and flavanones).

Excellent info, but I hate to tell you this, but that photo is not of a Valeriana officinalis, but instead it’s of an Achillea (A. millefolium? aka. Yarrow). They can look pretty similar but the differences are quite notable when compared to each other on google images.
